Biography: Mark Smith dominated Nova Scotia, Canada and World softball during a 20-year period starting in 1976. The husky left-handed pitcher was the youngest member of Nova Scotia's first entry at the Canadian National Junior Men's championship. His talent was quickly recognized.

Two years later, he left home to pitch in Grimsby, Ontario and then travelled the world. Along his journey, Smith began setting records and winning awards and trophies in tournaments from the Philippines to Venezuela and throughout the United States. He pitched the first no-hitter in Pan Am Games history in 1979 and was an outstanding player at the 1981 International Softball Congress world tournament.

Smith had a major league baseball tryout with the Kansas City Royals in 1982 and was a five-time, first team, all-world selection at the IBC championship. He also won gold medals at four Pan-Am Games, was named Nova Scotia’s Softball Coach of the year, twice, after his return to coaching in his native province, and was inducted into the Softball Canada Hall of Fame in 1999.
